A history of the fight that got kink de-classified as mental illness
Asking your partner to tie you to the bedpost, telling them to slap you hard in the throes of lovemaking, dressing like a woman if you are a man, admitting a fetish for feet: Just a few years ago, any of these acts could be used against you in family court.
2010, the American Psychiatric Association announced that it would be changing the diagnostic codes for BDSM, fetishism, and transvestic fetishism (a variant of cross-dressing) in the next edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) The new definitions marked a distinction between behavior—for example, playing rough—and actual pathology. Consenting adults were no longer deemed mentally ill for choosing sexual behavior outside the mainstream.
Mental illness comes from a suppression of what the mind is telling you that you want.
Society has progressed, now there is 50 shades, clubs that are swinger based as well as fetish, goth and themed events.
****paraphillia****a type of mental disorder characterized by a preference for or obsession with unusual sexual practices, as pedophilia, sadomasochism, or exhibitionism.
****sapiosexual****a person sexually attracted to intelligence
Marquee DeSade was considered mentally ill due to erotic writings
Cross dressing or gender identity is focusing on oneself.
Just because there’s nothing wrong with virtually every fetish doesn’t diminish from the fact that whether or not something is “weird” is a subjective reaction and there are tons of people who would find a number of fetishes weird.
I think we need to retire the words “weird” and “normal” on this sub. Arguably there ARE a number of things that a significant majority of people would say are weird or normal. But why should it matter in the first place? I agree that pleasure and consent are the only factors that matter.
I agree. I think trying to normalize the behavior is the wrong way to go. Acceptance and tolerance are fine, we don’t need all behavior to be considered normal.
I also know lots of people that would be almost offended if you called them normal. I don’t understand why everyone thinks that “weird” means the same thing as “bad”.
NOTE: I have found that a person attempting to hide, smother, ignore their kinks, fetishes, whether extreme or subtle, the mind will misfire or trigger stress or tension when not satisfied.
Being clear with who you are is not being a hero, it is being comfortable in your own skin. Bruce Jenner VS Eddie Izzard (oceans 12 and 13, comedian)
